Apple's AirPods lineup just got a shake-up. 1. AirPods Pro 3, best for most people

Score: 9.0/10. $329 CAD.

Still the default pick for anyone who wants the best. The sealed silicone-tip fit means its noise cancellation beats every open-ear bud Apple makes, and it keeps the extras the AirPods 5 don't get: heart-rate sensing during workouts, hearing protection features, and up to 8 hours of listening with ANC on. Add Live Translation, an IP57 rating on the buds and the case, and five tip sizes, and it's the complete package.

MobileSyrup's Canadian review called them a no-brainer for anyone who needs new earbuds. The one group that should pause: AirPods Pro 2 owners. The old Pros are still excellent and are getting software features like Live Translation anyway.

2. AirPods 5, best value

Score: 8.5/10. $179 CAD, or $209 with the Wireless Charging Case.

This is the new sweet spot. Apple put ANC in every AirPods 5, claiming 1.5x more noise reduction than the AirPods 4 with ANC, alongside Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Conversation Awareness, Personalized Spatial Audio, Live Translation, Siri AI, and an IP57 rating. The H2 chip carries over. What you don't get versus the Pro 3: the sealed fit (so ANC can't match it), heart-rate sensing, hearing protection, or lossless audio.

Which of the two models? Spend the extra $30 on the Wireless Charging Case version. For $209 you get an extra hour of ANC battery (5 hours versus 4), swipe volume controls on the stems, and a wireless charging case that works with Apple Watch chargers and Qi pads plus a Find My speaker. It's also $40 cheaper than the old AirPods 4 with ANC was, which makes the previous generation instantly obsolete.

Apple's second-generation over-ears, released March 2026, finally bring the Max line up to date: the H2 chip, a claimed 1.5x more effective ANC than the original, Live Translation, Conversation Awareness, and proper 24-bit/48kHz lossless audio over the included USB-C cable. TechRadar's reviewer called them the best noise-cancelling iPhone headphones on the planet, with glorious sound.

The problems are the same as ever: $799 CAD ($20 more than the original in Canada), 386 grams on your head, 20-hour battery that's merely fine, and the same Smart Case. This is a luxury pick. They've already been spotted well below MSRP, so never pay full price.

Pros: Best ANC you can get with an iPhone; lossless over USB-C; superb sound; Live Translation.

Cons: $799; heavy at 386g; mediocre 20-hour battery; buy only on sale.

Best for: Home and travel listeners who want the absolute best iPhone noise cancelling and don't mind the weight.

Who should skip

AirPods 4 owners: check clearance, not the new models. Your buds still work fine, and leftover AirPods 4 stock is being cleared cheap (iPhoneInCanada spotted them at $140 on Amazon.ca). That's a genuine bargain if you don't need ANC.

AirPods Pro 2 owners: you're fine. Still excellent, still getting software features like Live Translation. No need to spend $329.

Original AirPods Max owners: only upgrade if the battery is dying. The Max 2 is better in every way that matters, but the design, weight, and case are unchanged, and $799 is a lot for a chip and ANC upgrade.

Android users: look elsewhere. Everything that makes AirPods good, the pairing, the device switching, the spatial audio, is built for iPhones. On Android they're just expensive earbuds.
